Philippines calls for restoration of previous conditions in Myanmar
MANILA – Foreign Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. said the Philippines has continuously supported Myanmar’s progress towards a fuller democracy and “cognizant of the Army’s role” in preserving its territorial integrity and national security.
At the same time, Secretary Locsin said the Philippines recognizes the unifying role of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi “in the history of the country and Army her father founded.”
“The realization of this democratic process can only be achieved through the complete restoration of the status quo ante,” he concluded.
Formal and bilateral relations between the Philippines and Myanmar began in 1956. Myanmar has exported cereals to the Philippines amounting to US$104.6 million in followed by edible vegetables and certain roots and tubers worth US$8.6 million in 2019 according to Trading Economics. (Melo M. Acuña)
